However, it is equally proficient as a BC for a single-tank diver and, more to the point, it’s available in size XXXS. This helped when I needed to equip my 12-year-old daughter for a diving holiday with her dad to Camel Dive Centre in Egypt’s Sinai.
She was using a 3mm full-length suit with a 5mm shortie jacket on top, as the water was nseasonably cool.
It worked perfectly for her, although it presented the usual problem of a BC employed with a separate weightbelt. The BC tends to lift, while the weights pull down.
This chafed her neck until I moved two of the 5kg of lead from her belt to her BC pockets. The Velcro was tough enough to handle that, and the chafing ceased.
The Ego has useful pockets for stowing octo hoses or a pressure-gauge, though we chose to clip the latter to a lower D-ring, and we were able to adjust it to fit her perfectly.
At the surface, she was able to fully inflate the BC and float comfortably and securely. She exhibited perfect buoyancy control throughout her dives, so there was no question of air getting trapped in it on ascent.
She even got the hang of using the rear lower dump valve on head-down descents and started using the option of the top right shoulder dump rather than the oral inflation valve to dump air.
New divers are particularly susceptible to inefficient equipment, as it is a distraction, but what a great little BC it is, and what a great little diver my youngest has become.
If you have a bigger chest, I would go for a BC with integrated weights, which make such a difference to overall comfort in the water.
