AIRLINES MIGHT BE CHARGING A LOT for excess baggage, but even if you are prepared to pay, flights from the UK are still limited to a maximum weight per bag of 23kg.
Is this because more baggage-handlers are being recruited from countries that don't have state health insurance or a welfare state, and poor diet produces smaller people? The poor loves couldn't lift the bigger bags without dropping them - not that it stopped the bigger baggage-handlers from dropping them anyway.
So the Health & Safety Executive stepped in. That's the organisation that forces pensioners up ladders to clean their gutters out because they can't afford the scaffolding now required by the HSE-regulated professionals. Its officers decided that 23kg was the most a little baggage-handler could lift, and we're stuck with that.
The problem arises when you discover that a large part of your checked-baggage allowance is taken up by the weight of the bag in which you actually want to pack your stuff.
Enter Cressi to the rescue. The Italian company has put itself at the forefront of designing lightweight diving gear, and its bags are no exception. The Moby Light has wheels and an extending handle and consumes a voluminous 85 litres of kit. However, it weighs only 3kg!
This bag is simply a cavernous space, accessed via a single two-way YKK zip.
I don't know how many trips it will make before it becomes useless but, thank you Cressi, I'm going to do my best to find out!
