Competitors are welcome to turn up later but many of the best results in previous years have been from early starters. You can pre-register or simply turn up on the day.
The formation last October of the East Midlands Underwater Photographers group, whose monthly meetings at Stoney Cove attract 50-70 attendees, has raised expectations of the number of competitors for this year's Digital Splash-In.
There will be three categories: close-up, wide-angle and aquatic life, and the £5 entry fee covers all. Up to 3 pictures can be entered in each category. The competition is digital only and computers will be available to download images and select entries.
There will be prizes for the winners, and free hot drinks and magazines from the DIVER Magazine marquee (near the shower-block) for competitors, supporters and other divers enjoying a dip in Stoney Cove.
Every picture entered for the competition must be shot at Stoney Cove on 12th April 2008, using jpeg format and a digital multi-media card with no previously recorded images. Post-shooting adjustment or manipulation will not be allowed.
This is an opportunity for everyone to stake their claim to fame. All levels of ability are welcome and even the most seasoned photographers will be only as good as they are on the day. It's also a great chance to gain experience in time for the British Splash-In Championship to be held in Plymouth on July 12th, organised by the British Society of Underwater Photographers in association with the National Marine Aquarium, and also aimed at all levels of ability with special categories for beginners (visit: www.bsoup.org/Splash/intro.php ).
A selection of winners' entries will appear in DIVER Magazine for all to see. Further coverage will be given on www.divernet.com, so you could be published both in print and on line.
To register, call Margaret at Stoney Cove on 01455 273089 or email: marg@stoneycove.com.
About EMUP East Midlands Underwater Photographers (EMUP) has been created to cater for divers who would otherwise have to make their way to London for meetings of the British Society of Underwater Photographers (BSoUP); to Manchester for the Northern Underwater Photography Group (NUPG); or to Bristol for the Bristol Underwater Photography Group (BUPG).
The group's inaugural meeting was on 16 October, the first of monthly get-togethers from October to May each year, in the Nemo Bar at the Stoney Cove dive site, in Leicestershire. Each meeting will feature a well-known underwater photographic speaker, and a 'lighthearted monthly competition' for attendees, judged by the guest speaker of the day.
To pre-register, call Margaret at Stoney Cove on 01455 273089 or email: marg@stoneycove.com.
- After 8am on 12th April 2008 and before entering the water, each competitor must visit the DIVER Magazine marquee on the quayside to register and pay their entrance fee, demonstrate that their memory card is empty and take a photograph of the numbered competition identification card(s).
- Competitors may take as many images as they wish, as long as they are on memory cards which have been registered (more than one memory card may be used). Images may be taken in JPEG format.
- There are three categories; Close-Up, Wide-Angle, and Aquatic Life. A maximum of 9 images per entrant, and 3 in any one category, will be allowed.
- Competitors must return to the DIVER Magazine marquee not later than 2pm to log back in and select and save their chosen images using the on-site computers. Post-shooting adjustment or manipulation will not be allowed. Length of access will depend on demand at the time.
- Original, unchanged images must be kept on the card for the organisers to review to ensure that they were taken on the day and have not been manipulated.
- Images should be submitted in JPEG format at a maximum size of 1024 pixels wide or 768 pixels high or if downloaded straight from a card will be resized and rotated as applicable in Photoshop by the organisers. File names should comprise the photographer's name and the category, eg 'JSmithCloseUp1, JSmithCloseUp2, etc.
- A winner and two runners-up will be selected during the following two weeks by a panel of judges including representatives from DIVER Magazine and the British Society of Underwater Photographers.
- The organisers reserve the right to publish winning images in DIVER Magazine and on www.divernet.com, also in the Stoney Cove newsletter and on their website, and in the BSoUP newsletter and on their website. Winning images may also be used in future promotional material for the event royalty free, but copyright remains with the photographer.
- The organisers' decision on any matters arising from these rules shall be final.
