As part of the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP), the team is working to establishing new whale shark protection guidelines in the country, which boasts a year-round population of the spectacular but vulnerable species.
Working with the backing of the Maldivian Government, the team has been making annual visits to Rangali, in South Ari Atoll, since 2006. This year it is again being sponsored by the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort, which is providing support including a research vessel, dive kit, food, fuel and accommodation.
MWSRP also runs longer volunteer programmes, with team members involved in all aspects of research, from photographing, measuring and swimming with the whale sharks, to participation in community workshops and maintaining a database of animal sightings and movements.
Kuoni offers seven nights at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island from £2319pp for June departures. The price includes flights with Sri Lankan Airlines from Heathrow and seaplane transfers to the resort.
