Crown-of-thorns clean-up
18 July 2010
Avillion Layang Layang Island Resort in Malaysia is organising a clean-up of crown-of-thorns starfish in local reefs during the month of August.
"Following the recent increase in crown of thorns in the surrounding waters we are seeking help from divers to protect Layang Layang reefs from crown of thorns," says the resort.
One of the most efficient coral predators, crown-of-thorns starfish are found throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans, destroying reefs by eating the delicate coral polyps.
Located 300km off the north-east coast of Sabah, Layang Layang is a 14 sq km atoll rising 2000 metres from the depths of the South China Sea. Celebrated for its pelagic life including schooling hammerheads, barracuda and fusiliers, its coral reefs are home to a wide range of marine life.
Diving/accommodation packages at Avillion Layang Layang Island Resort start at US$1250 for 6 days/5 nights, including all meals and 3 boat dives per day, but Avillion says that it is offering a special non-profit package to all divers for the clean-up.
