Giant WW2 wreck opens to divers

25 February 2011

The world's first purpose-built aircraft-carrier, the giant 12,700-tonne HMS Hermes, was on route to the Maldives in 1942 when she was attacked and sunk by the Japanese, 5 miles off Sri Lanka's east coast. Resting at 45-58m, the intact wreck, a war grave, had been inaccessible until Sri Lanka's civil war ended.
