Dahab community unites with festival to defy Red Sea tourism down-turn

28th February 2012

Inspired by the powerful union of Egyptian people last year, the Dahab community combined forces to showcase the resort at its best by creating the inaugural Dahab Festival of Culture and Watersports. Following on from the success of this 2011 event and in an effort to assure visitors that Dahab is still very much open for business, the festivities will take place again this year from 14th-20th April.

Promising to be even bigger and better than last year’s festival, spectators will be able to watch impressive windsurfing freestyle displays by some of the biggest names in the sport, as well as some exciting kite-surfing and free-diving performances. International and local live music will provide a backdrop to a host of activities on dry land, such as yoga and ‘healing arts’ workshops. Traditional Bedouin culture will be showcased in the form of special talks, traditional bread making lessons and a camel race. For those keen to get into the water, free taster sessions will be available for novice divers, whilst experienced divers may want to try their hand at a new skill, such as free-diving. Throughout the week, there will be loads of competitions for the whole family – from a kids’ kite-making contest to an underwater treasure hunt.

In addition to the huge number of events planned for the festival, what really sets it apart is the fact that it has been organised entirely by the Dahab community in a group effort to boost the resort’s profile in the aftermath of the revolution. Johan Koops, one of the event organisers, explained, “The community would like to take this opportunity to show the world that Dahab is a safe travel destination. The Dahab festival sets out to show the world just what it is missing out on.“

Andreas Elia, Managing Director of Regaldive, commented, “It is important to remember that Red Sea resorts remain completely unaffected by any issues taking place elsewhere in Egypt. Dahab is known for its unique, laid back atmosphere and some of the most spectacular diving in the Red Sea. This festival provides a wonderful opportunity for novice and expert divers, as well as non-divers, to visit at a time when the resort will be buzzing with energy. There really will be something for everyone.”

Coinciding with this festival, Regaldive is offering a week’s holiday, staying at the 5* Hilton Dahab Resort from £673 per person, to include flights, transfers and seven nights’ accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis. A full range of diving courses and dive packs can be arranged by the diving holiday company.
