For its Mermaid Challenge the trainer, SaltFree, is offering free training and, if certain standards are reached, the opportunity to compete for a place in the British womens freediving team. International competitions include European and world events.

Disciplines involved include Static Apnea, a pool-based breath hold test; and Constant Weight freediving, where competitors descend and ascend by fin power only, carrying whatever weight they choose throughout the dive.

You could be a diver, snorkeller or swimmer. You need to be more than 18 years old and have a British passport. You need to apply for the Mermaid Challenge by 15 August.

SaltFree is run by Samantha Kirby, a former British freediving team captain and a qualified judge for events run by AIDA, the Association for the International Development of Apnea.
