Diver dies off Cornish beachA 43-year-old man has died, and the 12-year-old daughter of his partner was taken to hospital, after a scuba diving incident at East Portholland near St Austell on the south Cornish coast on Tuesday afternoon.

Police were called following reports that members of the public had retrieved the two divers from the sea. They were on holiday in the area with the rest of their family, the girl’s mother and two other children, from Horsham in West Sussex.

The police said that the man “had been scuba-diving with his partner’s daughter when they got into difficulty”.

Police, the Coastguard and ambulance service attended the scene, along with the Air Ambulance and Coastguard helicopters. Paramedics treated the man on the beach but he was declared dead at the scene. The girl was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth but discharged the following day.

Next of kin have been informed but formal ID has yet to be carried out on the male diver. “We are carrying out routine tests on the man’s scuba-diving cylinders, but this is a routine test and there is nothing to suggest this is anything other than a tragic accident,” said Police Inspector Paul Norlund.
