Welsh police raids target wreck-removals

Diving News

Police have raided two properties in and near Anglesey in Wales, in an operation described as relating to the “appropriation ad retention of maritime articles and war artefacts”. Items said to have been taken from shipwrecks were recovered.

Officers first entered a house in Amlwch in north Anglesey on Tuesday (5 September), according to the Daily Post.

Later a controlled explosion was carried out with the co-operation of a local farmer to destroy “a small number of items of ordnance”.

A second property in Bangor, 20 miles away on the other side of the Menai bridge, was being searched the following day. No arrests have been made, but searches and enquiries are said to be continuing.

“This was an intelligence-driven operation conducted with other agencies to recover items removed inappropriately from military and commercial shipwrecks across the United Kingdom,” North Wales police told the paper.

The other agencies are the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (Receiver of Wreck), Historic England and the Royal Logistic Corps of the British Army, which handles bomb disposal.
