The project, developed by Mantis Media, is backed by Merlin Entertainments, owner of Legoland, Alton Towers and some 130 other attractions, hotels and resorts around the world.

Merlin has gone into partnership with the ex-SAS survival expert, TV programme-maker and author and is investing around £20 million in building the 8000sq m permanent attraction. It says it has been inspired by the Grylls-type activities scuba-diving, rock-climbing, iFLY (indoor skydiving) and what are said to be “the highest free-roam high ropes in Europe”.

Entry to “Basecamp”, to be included in ticket prices that start from £25, will allow individuals or groups of customers to hone their skills through a selection of mental and physical challenges.

Construction is already under way at the NEC, the location each October/November for the Dive Show of the Year organised by the Diver Group. No details of the Bear Grylls Adventure scuba-diving component of the project are yet available, but it is described as “the ultimate deep dive experience”.
