David had worked for the magazine for more than 25 years, having previously been employed by the Ministry of Defence, and was a qualified diver. He was the youngest son of Bernard Eaton, the co-founder of the magazine in the 1960s, and his elder brother Nigel is its publisher.

“David was brought up with scuba diving and embraced the opportunity to get under water whenever possible,” said Nigel Eaton. “Possessing the ability to turn his hand to anything in life with skill, composure and good humour, he will be hugely missed.”

David, who lived in Twickenham, is survived by his wife Carol, his son Harry and his daughter Kate.
