Orcas on film

The Woman Who Swims With Killer Whales follows the work of New Zealand marine biologist Dr Ingrid Visser, known internationally for her work with orcas over nearly 20 years.

Included are fine shots of Dr Visser swimming with the creatures. She is claimed to be the only scientist to have got up close to them in this way.

The film’s conservation message relates to the increasing levels of industrial pollutants found in the bodies of orcas off New Zealand.

In 2010 there was an unusually high number of deaths amongst the creatures, and the area population of about 200 is no longer increasing.

Also demonstrated is that such problems extend to other orca populations around the world – and perhaps to humans as well.

The documentary starts at 8pm. It was made by the independent production company Big Wave Productions.
