Scottish seas under the microscope

They are being done in order to learn more about the country’s marine environments as the Scottish Government prepares to create a series Marine Protected Areas, in much the same manner as has been legislated for in England.

Eight surveys are planned to cover a total of some 2200 square miles, with underwater videoing and 3D sonar images gathered by vessels from Marine Scotland, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Northern Lighthouse Board.

The information gathered should produce more accurate seabed maps and a better understanding of habitats and species.
