The BSAC Underwater Litterpick 2012 was launched at the beginning of August and, by the time it winds up on 31 October, it is hoped that BSAC branches around the country will have collected and recorded major hauls of litter as members go about their diving business.
The campaign, which will run annually, is potentially of immense value. Collection of rubbish from deeper waters will complement existing clean-up campaigns, such as those run by the Marine Conservation Society, whose volunteers are mainly shore-based and clear inter-tidal zones.
“Whether it is your whole dive club or a few volunteers, a one-off dive or incorporated into your dive club calendar, the BSAC Underwater Litterpick is a chance for BSAC divers to make a difference in the fight against marine litter,” says the club.
“All data collected and recorded will be used in the BSAC Underwater Litterpick 2012 report and will also contribute to MCS’s own scientific research into marine pollution in the UK.”
Mary Tetley, BSAC Chief Executive, says: “This is a great opportunity to make a difference by not only cleaning up our dive sites but by contributing to wider scientific research into the issues of marine pollution.”
