Destroyer down off Queensland
|
HMAS Brisbane, a decommissioned Australian destroyer, has been sunk as an artificial reef and dive attraction off Mudjimba Island, in Queensland.

The ship settled bolt upright as required. Her new eco-life follows a particularly long naval career. An Adams-class guided-missile destroyer, Brisbane was built in the USA for Australia in 1967. She served in Vietnam in 1969 and 1971, and the Gulf War of 1991. She was decommissioned in 2001.
Apparently unique for an Australian warship, no fewer than four of HMAS Brisbane's officers went on to hold the rank of either Admiral or Rear-Admiral in the Royal Australian Navy.
Now, the ship's task is to produce an estimated $22 million a year in diving-related tourism.
