Birth of the rays
A British aquarium is celebrating what is believed to be a world first - the reproduction in captivity of bluespotted ribbontail rays, members of the stingray family.
Two of the rays have been born at The Deep, Hull's £53 million aquarium. The Deep has already bred various animals including seahorses and sharks, but bluespotted ribbontail rays are extremely difficult to breed in captivity. They give birth to live young, rather than laying eggs as many other rays do. They are found in the Pacific Ocean and the Red Sea, where they grow to about 75cm in length.
