The man was rushed ashore to Seahouses by RIB, where holidaying doctors were able to provide emergency treatment, before being taken by air ambulance to Newcastle General Hospital.
A Coastguard rescue team was in attendance, but the Coastguard says that radio communications were poor, and that it was not informed directly of the incident, only through a third party. The diver, as yet unnamed, remains in intensive care, and the incident is under investigation.
