The diver has been named by police as John Woodward, 73, from Stockport, Manchester. He was spotted at the surface by a fisherman and was recovered by an inshore lifeboat. Paramedics confirmed him dead at the scene.
The Coastguard and police have confirmed that Woodward was diving alone. 'At first we could not be sure whether or not there were other divers involved,' a member of Forth District Coastguard told Divernet. 'Police then obtained details of family or friends from materials in Mr Woodward's car, and were able to establish that he had visited the site alone.'
The death brings to eight the number of British divers who have lost their lives in British or Channel waters so far this year.
