|
The go-ahead has been given for the design of a new permanent museum to house Henry VIII's flagship Mary Rose, in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The museum will feature a virtual glass hull mirroring the ship’s starboard-side remains. Deck galleries will be constructed within the virtual ship in layers, corresponding with the original deck levels. This will allow artefacts to be displayed in areas of the ship where they would originally have been. Stepped walkways will surround the vessel, allowing visitors to view the original remains and the new deck gallery constructions from all angles and a number of heights. There will be other galleries plus education, shop, restaurant and cafe areas.
The Mary Rose Museum plan has been accepted as a cultural project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The aim is to complete the museum by 2011, the 500th anniversary of the launch of the Mary Rose.
