Yarmouth Coastguard, based at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, received a call from the diving RIB Safari Diver, reporting that a diver had lost consciousness while ascending some 13 miles off Sea Palling, near Happisburgh.
The casualty was taken aboard the dive boat and given oxygen by the crew, who received additional advice from a hyperbaric doctor via the Coastguard’s radio/telephone link system.
Wattisham’s RAF rescue helicopter was scrambled and Happisburgh RNLI Inshore Lifeboat launched. Two dive boats that were in the area made their way over and stood by.
The casualty was airlifted to the recompression unit at James Paget Hospital in Gorlestone, where he had regained consciousness upon admission. Last reports were that he was making a good recovery.
