The sub was sunk with all 80 crew in 1943 in La Perouse Strait, north of Japan. In six patrols, Wahoo operated daringly and sank a high tonnage of Japanese shipping.
In one highly controversial action, after sinking a troopship Wahoo surfaced and shot up some 20 lifeboats containing hundreds of survivors, rather than take any prisoners.
