Examples were a new type of rock lobster found off Madagascar; an estimated 20 million fish schooling off New Jersey in a school the size of Manhattan; and a species of shrimp in the Coral Sea thought extinct millions of years ago. Tagging operations involved sharks, sea lions, squid and albatrosses.
Backed by governments, the UN and private organisations, the annual Census projects run to 2010, when a final report will be published. Records are held in the online library of the Census Oceanic Biogeographic Information System. |
