The National Sea Rescue Institute told press that the 27-year-old was spearfishing with friends off Yellow Sands, near East London, on Christmas Eve when he was shot through the neck. The divers, added the NSRI, may have been operating in poor visibility.
The diver was fortunate that the spear missed major blood vessels and other vital organs. The casualtyÂ’s fellow-divers got him into the dive-boat, removed the spear, stemmed blood flow and put out an emergency call.
The man was evacuated to hospital and was reportedly well enough to be released on Christmas Day morning. |
