The 23m-long Sea Venture is scheduled to be sunk in April, off an inshore reef close to the popular Blue Hole dive site in Eastern Blue Cut.
A volunteer team, many of whom are local divers, are clearing the vessel of pollutive materials and potentially dangerous snagging items. Assistance has been provided by the Department of Marine and Ports, which removed engines and other heavy machinery, and various commercial concerns.
There could be more opportunities to establish ship reefs. 'If the volunteers do a good job, there are other vessels on the horizon for us to sink as diving attractions,' Andrew Raine, volunteer PR Co-ordinator for the Bermuda Intact Wreck Initiative, told Divernet.
