Jeremiah Johnson, 36, entered the water from an inflatable off Lanai, and carried out a freedive reportedly to 27m. Witnesses saw him lose consciousness during his ascent, at a depth of about 12m, and sink back to the bottom.
Boat crew from the main boat retrieved his body using scuba gear. Johnson, who had taught environmental studies and marine biology at Punahou School, was on an excursion aboard a research vessel with 13 other adults and 98 students.
Johnson was reported to have freedived from the age of 10. An autopsy physician found no evidence of illness, and described him as in 'very good shape'.
