Even the late Steve Irwin would have been impressed - even though the move was firmly in the idiot category and, sadly for conservationists, the shark ended up not back in the sea but in the deep freeze.
Phillip Kerkhoff, 41, was with friends sport-fishing for squid off a jetty at Louth Bay, near Adelaide, when he spotted the bronze whaler in shallow water, targeting the same creatures.
According to Australian media Kerkhoff, well tanked up after 'a fair few' vodkas, decided to take things literally into his own hands. He climbed down the jetty ladder and waded about after the shark as it circled the jetty.
'I just snuck up behind him and eventually I went for the big grab and I fluked it and got him,' Kerkhoff told ABC. 'He was thrashing around in the water, then started to turn around, trying to bite me.'
Fuelled by the vodka, Kerkhoff kept at it and, unbelievably, landed the shark with only a hole in his jeans and a scratched leg. Later he admitted that he had been 'a bit of an idiot'. 'It's not something I'd recommend anyone to do,' he said. |
