The remains, in a cave in Vouliagmeni Lake, were recovered by divers of the Pan-Hellenic Association of Frogmen last year. US-made diving equipment was recovered with the bones.
The Americans went missing while diving the cave in 1979. They were Air Force men Donald Michaud, 32 and Jan Granroth, 20, based at Hellenikon Air Base; and Granroth's brother Mark, 21. With a Greek diver who died in 1990, they are the only divers known to have perished in the cave system.
The bones were first examined at the University of Athens Forensics and Toxicology Laboratory Medical School. They were passed to Ramstein US Air Base this February, and have been forwarded to US Air Force pathologists for DNA analysis.
A spokeswoman for US Air Forces in Europe has said it would take between one and two months to positively identify the remains.
