According to Chinese state media, a ban proposal has been put forward by a deputy to the National People's Congress. Xu Zhihong, also President of Peking University, has suggested that shark fin be withdrawn - along with other wildlife delicacies including bear paw, snake and swallow. According to the China Daily, Zhihong said that serving such dishes 'could greatly hurt China's image'.
In recent years, despite the efforts of marine conservation groups around the world, Chinese imports of shark fins have increased. Chinese public figures campaigning against fin dishes have included gymnast Li Ning and US-based basketball player Yao Ming.
