An Australian frigate is to be decommissioned and sunk in 35m of water at Terrigal, an hour's drive north of Sydney.

HMAS Adelaide was built in the USA and commissioned as Australia's first guided-missile frigate in 1980. The 138m ship will be decommissioned in late 2007 at her home port of Rockingham, Western Australia.
She will be gifted, along with $3 million for sinking preparations, to the government of New South Wales by mid-2008.
Old ships are being turned into artificial reefs and diving attractions in increasing numbers, particularly in the USA, as providing both economic disposal and a useful afterlife.
For certain types of vessel, cleaning and sinking is proving less expensive than the balance sheet from storing, breaking and scrap sales.
