Dive-shop owner Randy Thornton, 50, was in a group swimming with humpbacks off Sandy's Silver Banks when one whale mum decided that enough was enough when her calf started to panic.
She swished her tail and broke Thornton's femur 'like a twig'. Thornton had to endure a nine-hour boat trip back to port and treatment, his buddies having set him up with splints made from fins and a weightbelt.
