The bay has been closed to all motorised craft, including dive boats, in order to protect the local population of dugongs and other creatures, including giant green turtles.
But limited shore diving is being allowed to continue, based at Abu Dabab's Orca Dive Club.
'Access to the bay from the shore is still permitted at this time, although there will be limitations on the numbers of divers and snorkellers allowed in the water at any one time,' said a representative for Orca Dive Clubs.
'The diving programme for Orca Dive Club Abu Dabab is fully operational as before, although there may be some minor changes in the daily schedule from time to time.'
A marine life survey project - presumably involving some of the shore divers and snorkellers - is to take place. 'A sighting and mapping programme is to be initiated to collect data about the resident dugong population, which is an endangered species,' said the representative.
'A public awareness campaign will run alongside these practical measures to educate and inform visitors to the Red Sea.'
