Shaun Fallaize, 42, from St Martin's, was diving in the area of Fermain beach, a scenic underwater site popular with divers, including scallop collectors. He was found on the surface by the local lifeboat, off Icart. Still alive, he was given rescuscitation treatment, but died later at Princess Elizabeth Hospital.
A local diving instructor of 35 years' experience told journalists that conditions on the day included extreme tides moving towards springs, and winds of Force 5-6. But it was not clear whether or not this was a relevant factor in Fallaize's death.
Last September, Fermain beach was the scene of a faked disappearance by another local diver, Matthew Harvey. He reappeared on shore two days later with the story that he'd lost consciousness and drifted at sea, perhaps after banging his head on a rock. In fact he'd taken a ferry to the mainland for a trip away.
Harvey's mental state was questioned and, despite having cost the taxpayer untold thousands in search and rescue operations, no criminal charges were brought.
