University of Plymouth scientists have identified a bacterium, Vibrio splendidus, that produces enzymes that attack and kill the tissue of pink seafans.
Disease among the species was first noted off Lundy Island in 2002, since when the disease seems to have spread south and east, affecting fans off Plymouth and further up-Channel, in Lyme Bay.
The rare pink seafan is statutorily protected.
