A local businessman, Anthony Fowler, is reported to have submitted a 60-page dossier to Seaford Town Council, proposing the scuttling of at least two decommissioned Royal Naval ships in Seaford Bay as artificial reefs and diving attractions.
Fowler has taken as a model the acquisition and sinking of the decommissioned HMS Scylla off Plymouth. That project cost around ?1 million, largely met by the South West Regional Development Agency, but the wreck is reported to bring in about the same amount in tourism revenue each year.
Fowler has invited a representative of the Scylla project to Seaford to give a presentation on how the South West campaign was run. Funds for the project could come from private businesses and/or regional development organisations.
Interested parties will include South East of England Development Agency, the Environment Agency, Newhaven Community Development Association, Lewes District Council, East Sussex County Council, and local residents.
