The island has become temporarily inaccessible, after storms severely damaged its only road. At the moment, any provisions landed at its harbour cannot be transported to residents or dwellings housing visiting tourists.
The island is popular with divers and terrestrial wildlife enthusiasts. While some visit by day, involving a 15-mile trip out from the mainland, others elect to stay on the island for, say, a diving or bird-watching holiday.
For the moment, it seems, it's day trips only until the road system can be fixed. Lundy's owner, the National Trust, is reported to require some ?250,000 to effect the repairs. It is reported to have drawn up contingency plans to evacuate the island's 29 permanent residents if necessary.
