Dine under water - for charity

A London health club director is running an underwater formal dinner at one his pools, to raise money for charity.

Tim Slater, Sales Director of the Hogarth Group, is running the event on 22 September at the company's Park Club, in East Acton Lane, London W3.
A number of national celebrities are lending their names. Rugby-player Matt Dawson and Olympic rower James Cracknell have pledged support, though will not be able to attend - but actor Nigel Havers is expected to be in the thick of things as an underwater waiter!
Participants are asked to raise at least ?100 each, through sponsorship or a donation. The total raised will be split equally between six charities, listed on the event website.
Wearing full evening dress, the diner/divers will seat themselves at the tables to consume real gourmet food, prepared by a 'famous experimental kitchen' as pellets that will not disintegrate under water!
Diving management will be by Chiswick's London School of Diving, which will have 10 safety divers in the water to tend batches of up to 20 diners. LSD will provide breathing gear and weightbelts, and a pre-immersion briefing.
The event will be held in the 25m pool's shallow end, in 1.2m of water, so will be sit-down rather than dive-down. Non-divers are expected to make up 60% of the diners.
The ambition was to put as many as 2500 people through the water but, with 10 days to go, Tim Slater has confirmed that the realistic figure is likely to be around 500.
Apart from raising money for charity, Slater is talking to the Guinness Book Of Records about the possibility of establishing a new record category for the largest underwater formal dinner party. The event would then be recorded in line with Guinness' requirements.
The only associated record to date is for the highest formal dinner party. A group called the Social Climbers, ascended a Peruvian mountain to dine at 6890m !
The underwater event will be Slater's second. In 1991, as a new Hogarth employee, he ran a similar event at a Notting Hill outlet, as part of Comic Relief.
