Paddle battle with white shark
|
A woman has escaped the clutches of a great white shark by acting on the principle that 'if it goes for you, you go for it'.

Linda Whitehurst was with her husband, Glen, each on surf skis about 150m from the shore in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia, when the incident occurred.
Linda told journalists that they had been riding in on the waves when she saw a 'big dark object' close by. Soon afterwards Glen watched the shark, estimated at about 9m long, emerge from the water, take the rear end of his wife's surf ski in its mouth and give it 'a good shake'.
Linda fell off and found herself close to the shark under water. 'I just tried making as much motion and noise as I could to show the shark that I'm bigger and stronger than it,' she said. 'I got my blade [paddle] and was punching the shark in the face as hard as I could.'
The great white backed off, allowing Linda to regain her surf ski and, with Glen, paddle back to shore. A registered nurse, she found herself on the receiving end of hospital treatment - a mere four stitches to a forearm cut. |
