While on a course for beginners off Simon's Town, in Cape Province, the husband, 54, was reported to have got into difficulties in just 6m of water.
After his mask filled, he panicked and was unable to release his belt or surface by other means. His wife also panicked and started swallowing water.
The pair were retrieved, the husband unconscious and the wife described as in a near-drowned state.
Both recovered after effective first aid measures and transfer to hospital for observation.
