Wessex, managed by English Heritage for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, provides services related to the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973.
Its key role lies in assessing underwater locations as prospective protected sites, and in overseeing the monitoring of designated sites by appointed licencees.
Wessex Archaeology advises English Heritage, Historic Scotland, Cadw, and the Environment and Heritage Service Northern Ireland.
These report in turn to the Secretary of State and Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland Ministers, who decide whether a given proposal should go forward for debate in Parliament.
Wessex's new contract runs to 31 March, 2011. |
