Gill Taylor, 42, from Manchester, had enjoyed a dive with her husband on the reefs of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, Australia, when she suffered a heart attack and seizure at a depth of 6m.
She was brought to the surface and back aboard the dive boat, where a doctor and nurse, both Australians, were among the divers on the deck. They performed efficient CPR on the unconscious diver until she could be airlifted to hospital.
After Mrs Taylor had received recompression treatment, a hyperbaric medical specialist said: 'The decompression injury resulted in a number of neurological effects to the patient, including temporary blindness.'
Describing Mrs Taylor as 'progressing well', the doctor added: 'If not for the immediate treatment the patient received from the doctor and nurse aboard the dive boat, the outcome might have been very different.' |
