The juvenile shark, which came ashore dead on a beach in Nantucket, Massachusetts, was measured at 2m long.
Lisa Capone, speaking for the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, told Boston press: 'It sort of confirms what I think our scientists have known. There are great white sharks [in this region]. They're not common, but they're not unheard of.'
The beaching came soon after the sighting of what was possibly a great white by lifeguards on a Martha's Vineyard beach. Another sighting in the same area was later shown to be a hoax.
A great white was netted as by-catch off Rhode Island last year. According to Lisa Capone, a great white last came ashore in the Nantucket area some 20 or more years ago. |
