It happened last weekend during the Curaçao Chess Festival, when Lion Dive & Beach Resort combined with the Curaçao Seaquarium to rope in Dutch players Robin Swinkels and Hans Böhm.
The two men competed on the Saturday for the right to play US champion Anna Zatonskih on the Sunday.
Lion provided dive instruction to prepare the competitors, and supporters were able to watch the game from a glass-bottomed boat.
Fish and sting rays swarming around can't have helped the players' concentration.
The first game ended in a draw, but it was decided that Swinkels would go forward to the Sunday, when he and Zatonskih shared the points.
