Holland & Barrett bows to pressure
|
Holland & Barrett, the UK's largest chain of health foods stores, has finally stopped selling shark-cartilage capsules.

Credit for bringing about the change goes to marine-life pressure group Bite-Back, which waged a year-long email campaign to bring about a ban.
More than 3000 supporters contacted the American-owned company to request that the item be discontinued. The capsules will no longer be sold in any of H&B's 550 stores.
'Businesses profiting from the shark-fishing industry are effectively endorsing an underwater genocide,' said Bite-Back's Campaign director Graham Buckingham.
'This is a perfect example of how Bite-Back supporters can help devalue a dead shark. We are grateful for Holland & Barrett's decision and we're confident that it will have knock-on effects throughout the retail industry.'
Bite-Back says it also recently inspired the world's only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant, Hakkasan in London, to stop selling the shark-fin soup it formerly sold at ?42 a bowl.
ASDA, Sainsbury's, Somerfield, Tesco, Wagamama, Waitrose and many individual restaurants have changed their merchandising policies in the past following Bite-Back campaigns.
