Hans Harald Ylvisaker was finning about in the sea at a depth of 15m, in search of crayfish, when his highly unexpected discovery occurred. Like an apparition, the sheep appeared out of the gloom, anchored by three of its legs to a stone but bloatedly floating clear of the bottom.
Ylvisaker, who works in law enforcement, told the newspaper Dagbladet: 'I've never experienced anything like this in my 35 years in the Police. We see a lot of different things.'
The diver returned with other members of his diving club, Sogndal Dykkarklubb, to film the sheep and report its discovery. Via an identifying tag later found on the carcass, it was traced to a farmer who admitted that he had dumped the dead animal in a somewhat unusual manner.
At the time of the Norwegian press report, the farmer had yet to explain his unorthodox method of carcass disposal. He faced the wrath of hygiene inspectors for breaching regulations governing the disposal of dead animals.
