A'Lee, 52, was a teacher at Blundell's school in Devon and was on a diving trip which included senior school pupils and her partner, also a teacher.
At the time of the incident, A'Lee is reported to have been diving with one of the pupils, while her partner was diving separately with the rest of the seven-strong group.
On surfacing, A'Lee was seen to be in difficulty, before losing consciousness. She was recovered aboard the dive boat and, being not far from shore, was taken directly to Orphir's Houton Pier. Despite the efforts of tending paramedics and doctors, she did not regain consciousness and died at the scene.
Blundell's headmaster, Ian Davenport, described A'Lee as a 'very experienced and highly qualified diver'. A 'popular and respected' member of staff, she had joined the half-term diving trip, run as one of the school's varied extracurricular outdoor activities.
Police are investigating the incident, and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed.
