While diving with whale sharks near Australia's Christmas Island, 2600 km north-west of Perth, they managed to catch a whale shark in the act of defecation.
Project member Dr Mark Meekan, of the Australian Institute of Marine Science, described the faeces, which were retrieved, as 'scientific gold'.
Analysis showed that the creature had consumed a large amount of red crab larvae, which is prevalent off Christmas Island.
Footage of the great pooing moment appears in a BBC Natural World programme, Whale Shark.
