Project AWARE pans Cornish dumping
PADI's influential Project AWARE Foundation has added its voice to concerns over the dumping of dredged waste from the River Tamar in Whitsand Bay, near Plymouth.
The operation has been carried out by the Royal Navy, materials excavated and dumped including waste from many years of activity at Devonport Dockyard. The fear is that some of the waste will prove toxic to marine life. Project AWARE is 'calling on all concerned divers and non-divers for action to prevent further dumping in the area'.
Dive sites in Whitsand Bay include the WW2 US Liberty ship James Eagan Layne and the decommissioned Royal Naval frigate HMS Scylla.
