Pains Wessex has recalled a batch of emergency hand flares, following injury to an instructor who was demonstrating an example.

The company is recalling a number of its White Collision Warning (Mk7) Hand Flares. The flare is sold on its own, and as part of Pains Wessex's Collision Warn-Off Kit and, for yachtsmen, the ORC RORC Distress Kit.
The flare's product number is 52651, and lot numbers of the batches recalled are 2045 and 2046, expiry date 12/08. The lot numbers are ink-jetted on the flares' metal tubes.
Owners of such flares should return them ideally to the point of purchase, where they will be replaced. Alternatively, the process can be administered at other marine chandlers, or by contacting Pains Wessex at 02392 623962 (24hr helpline) or recall@pwss.com
In early April, a sailing instructor was seriously injured when demonstrating a flare. He is reported to have suffered burns, broken hand and arm bones, and penetration of the abdomen by the flare's tubing.
Pains Wessex has said that its 'thoughts are with the injured party and their family and we wish them a speedy recovery'.
