Known as a fanshell (Atrina fragilis), the creature was found by staff and students from Plymouth University. The 30cm-long example is only the 15th to be recorded in Britain in recent times, and the first intertidal specimen found in 50 years.
Fanshells normally live in deeper water, and are thought to have been common around Britain before the arrival of industrial trawling.
